About Kolkata

Kolkata, the capital of eastern state of West Bengal, is a very unique travel destination in India. Located on the banks of Hoogly River, Kolkata has a plethora of tourist attractions that stands as illustration of the great history, culture and traditions of this city. The city is a metropolitan, which is the third largest metropolitan city in India. The city is also known by the names of 'city of joy', 'the city of processions', and the 'cultural capital of India'. Kolkata also gained international visibility due to the city's association with legendary personalities like Mother Teresa, Nobel prize winner poet Rabindra Nath Tagore, freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and well known movie director Sathyajith Ray. 

Kolkata was the capital of India under the rule of East India company till 1911. The city witnessed good development and progress during this time and the monuments and buildings here still stands as an illustration of the long association of city with the British Raj. There are many monuments in the city that illustrates the charming architecture of British Raj including Victoria Memorial, St Paul's Cathedral, Marble Palace, and the national library. Other important tourist attractions in the city are the botanical garden, city zoo, and the city museum. The most important tourist attraction in Kolkata is the Howrah Bridge, which is a mammoth structure that is long associated with the city by travellers. 

Kolkata has been an important centre of literature and art since the early part of Indian history. Travellers visiting the city must attend one or more of these cultural activities at various venues including dance and music performances, plays, drama, art galleries etc. The city is also famous for its Bengali cuisine and sweets. Kolkata has also long been an important industrial and commercial centre with the industrial icons like Birla Corporation, ITC Limited and Bata India associated with this city. 

One of the most unique experience that a visitor can only get here is a Tram ride through the narrow lanes of old city. Visitors can still find hand pulled rickshaws in the old city. The weather of Kolkata is very humid and hot during the summers. The best time to visit city is during winter when the temperature is pleasant. The most important festival celebrated in the city is the Navratri, which must be attended by visitors to witness the grandeur of this traditional festival.
