About Dharamshala

Dharamshala is a beautiful and peaceful town, situated at a wonderful location in Kangra district of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Dharamsala is 18 Km from Kangra and easily accessible from the broad gauge line at Pathankot. Dharamshala is also Headquarter of the Kangra district. The city is surrounded by dense forest consisting mainly of Deodars. The Dalai Lama resides in the village of Mcleodganj lying in the upper reaches of Dharamshala; the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) was moved to Dharamshala from Mussoorie in May 1960 and this has turned Dharamshala into a Buddhist Capital of the world. His presence and the Tibetan population has made Dharamshala a popular destination for Indian and foreign tourists, including students studying Tibet. It has the school of Tibetan studies with rare manuscripts of ancient texts, the Tibetian Institute for the performing Arts and handicrafts Centre. 

Dharamshala is also known for trekking. It is a starting point to a number of trekking trails that especially lead trekkers across Dhauladhar into the upper Ravi Valley and Chamba district. Dharamshala is an ideal destination for rock climbing enthusiasts. One can go rock climbing over the ridges of the Dhauladhar range. The snow-capped mountains can be easily viewed throughout the year.
