Purana Quila - Delhi

Purana Quila (Old Fort), situated at Mathura Rd. Delhi, is a good example of medieval military architecture. Founded by Mughal emperor Humayun in 1538, the fort is different from the typical forts of the later Mughal rulers, as it does not have a complex of palaces, administrative, and recreational buildings and less emphasis on decoration. The old fort with its massive walls and imposing gateways overlooks the modern city of New Delhi. The Purana Quila is a monument of strong bold design having three gates - Humayun Darwaza, Talaqi Darwaza and Bara Darwaza. Bara Darwaza is the entrance at present. Important monuments inside the Old Fort are the Qal'a-I-Kunha Masjid and Sher Mandal, a two-storied octagonal pavilion in red sandstone.
